Nailed a pothole in my MK6 GTI this morning on the commute and blew my FR tire. I’m on Detroit wheels. I live in Boston proper (also where I hit the pothole - such lovely roads here) and commute 14-20 miles round trip M-F.
I’m currently going back and forth with a guy on CL for 4 General Altimax Arctic s on steelies for $125. He says they’ve got at least one season left in them. I don’t care about how dingy the wheels look either.
My question is, what would you do? A. Craigslist winters B. replace blown tire with same/similar tire (Yoko Avid Envigor). Both are nearly the same price.

id go with the winter steelies... those things can take a beating and the roads dont tend to get any better during winter

I’d get those winters If they’ll fit. Altimax winters are great, we have a set on my wife’s Fit, and they were 85/each new, so that price is a great deal

Safari Car B uild. Obviously.

They came off an Mk6 Sportwagen and after some checking online I believe brakes are identical or near enough to make no difference. Plus, looking at the pictures, I’m 99% sure they’re the Tire Rack steelies which will fit my GTI. Rocking 16s instead of low-pro 18s would be a relief in and of itself in the winter. Gimme that sidewall.

“One more season in them” translated from Craigslist means they’ve been worn out for at least two years.

I’d normally concur with you but it looks to be a truthful description. I think he sold the VW leaving him with winter tires he no longer needed. I’ll update the post w the pictures from the ad.

This is the correct answer.

I had those same tires and steels on my MK7. Damn near unstoppable and the taller sidewalls gave a nice ride while absorbing the crap roads down there. I live in NH and commute to Boston so we have the same conditions. Get the winter tires and replace your one dead one in the spring.

I think it also depends on how thick your tires are too. I nailed a curb on my oversized 55- aspect tires, entire car went up the curb but there was no damage at all aside from my front splitter crack.
But for those who just swaps winter tires size for size onto their factory rims that came with the car then yeah I see what you mean... like why does a family car need 18" 45-aspect tires?

eh.. i think they are mostly fitted to look good and drive not bad nowadays

my BIL has a MK7 golf Wagon I need to send this to him

Well they certainly don’t look good when they expose that tiny brake rotor behind it...

That was exactly my plan. I luckily have a place to store my all-seasons. Just waiting to hear back from the seller and I’ll pull the trigger if the tires present in-person as well as they do in the pictures.

We get enough snow in Boston that having winters on steelies is not a terrible idea, provided there’s actually tread left.

I’d buy the set with a season left on em- that way, when this inevitably happens again, you'll have three spares.

Steels if you can confirm the tire date and tread depth.

I lived in Boston for three years without winter tires. I then lived in Rhode Island for 4 years without winter tires. I’ve never understood the need.

They’re not a necessity. However, for the price, it being the time of the year that it is, and having lost a tire today it makes sense in my eyes.

I’m just glad I don’t need them where I live. I would go broke!

Is storing the winter tires an issue? If not, get them. A new set of steelies is like 100 bucks or something. I’ll bet there are two winters out of that set depending on your driving habits.

Storage won’t be an issue (MIL’s garage)
![]() 11/19/2018 at 13:39 |

Get em. A mediocre set of wheels will run that much.

Looks like a good deal, 10/10 would get for $125.

Picking them up tomorrow morning. Woohoo.

Between rent and these roads I’m not far from it!

Steelies are worth at least $100 alone... for
$125, I also say go for it.

At least the Mk6 has an almost full size spare (haven’t had to use mine yet fortunately)
